Growth in shipments of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) infrastructure remained strong in the third quarter of this year, according to a new IDC study reported by MyADSL.

The survey found a 15.7 per cent increase in IP telephone shipments over the second quarter of 2006, with total revenues in the third quarter topping $580 million (£296 million).

Cisco remains the largest single firm in this sector, with its market share increasing from 33.7 per cent in the second quarter to 34.2 per cent in the third quarter.

“Overall [the third quarter of 2006] was a quarter of steady growth for the European IP PBX and IP telephone market. Every quarter we see the number of IP PBX and IP telephone sales growing,” Rogier Mol, a senior analyst at IDC, told MyADSL.

He added: “Apart from the replacement of TDM infrastructure we can see that this growth is driven by employees’ need to communicate with each other more efficiently.”

Furthermore, the European IP PBX market was valued at almost $394 million (£201 million) in this quarter.

During this quarter a total of 1.4 million IP lines were shipped, the study reports.
