Christian mobile content provider, Unity In Values, announced the launch of The Mobile Word Video Community, the first user-generated mobile video service targeted at Christian youth. Available on The Mobile Word, the application gives consumers the opportunity to use technology to stay in touch with the
community and share their spiritual values. To kick start the application, Unity In Values has launched an initiative to collect video prayers for the troops, with the goal of reaching one million video prayers by the end of June.

The Million Prayers for the Troops initiative allows Christian youth to express their support for friends and family and other American soldiers in the military. Subscribers from every major U.S. mobile phone carrier can record their inspirational message or prayer on their video capable cell phone and send their video message from their phone to video@mobileword.mobi. Users without video phones can upload prayers from their computers at The Mobile Word website. Upon review, the submitted prayers will be available at the same website and via wireless providers who carry The Mobile Word application.

In addition to the Million Prayers for the Troops, users can submit Christian and other video clips in the music, comedy, entertainment or inspiration category. Registered users of the Mobile World website will be able to view their submissions, as well as rate other content. Unity In Values will review submissions to ensure that each video meets Christian decency standards and award prizes to the best videos in each category. Furthermore, Unity In Values will donate $1000 each month to a charity supporting the troops on behalf of the user who sends the top rated Prayer for the Troops. [via]

Motorists caught using hand-held mobile phones while at the wheel face penalty points on their licence and a higher fine after stricter rules came into force today.

The maximum fixed-penalty fine has doubled to £60 and, for the first time, offenders will get three penalty points added to their licence.

Some drivers have flouted existing rules, introduced in December 2003, banning the use of hand-held mobiles and continued to talk and text while behind the wheel.

Figures from the Department for Transport show that 21 per cent of drivers admitted to breaking the law.

Police said that there have been 77,000 people fined for driving while using their mobile phones. It is hoped that the new measures, under which drivers could be disqualified for incurring too many penalty points, will deter more people.

However, road-safety campaigners said the new punishments do not go far enough and called for the use of hands-free phones to also be banned.

Jools Townsend, of the charity Brake, said: “It is high time the Government took steps to ensure the law is properly enforced, and to extend the ban on using mobile phones while driving to reflect research which shows using a hands-free phone at the wheel can be equally deadly.”

Motorizr Z6

While some well known manufacturers like to release a large series of products, that they have been saving in order to launch at the Consumer Electronics Show, others - like Motorola - are barely heard of, at least compared to the others.

Although less noticed than the rest, Motorola has announced a new RAZR-like phone with a slider form factor. The Z6 features Motorola’s Linux and Java-based platform and sports a nice set of features, including a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, support for Windows Media Player 11 as well as the integrated music player and WMA, MP3, AAC, AAC+, AAC+ enhanced, AMR NB, WAV and XMF file support.

So that you can store your music, the Motorola Z6 comes with a 64MB internal memory, but if that’s not enough, more space is provided, as always, through a MicroSD card slot that allows up to 2GB memory cards.

The phone's design is very typical for a RAZR-like phone, thus the phone features the same type of keys, as well as the glass and metal mirror-like finish we have gotten used to since the release of the first phone of this type.

The phone will reportedly last for around 180-420 minutes of talk time or up to 400 hours on standby mode. The Z6 was designed to provide the user with an exceptional music experience and will be available in the first half of 2007. [via]

The mobile phone pictured here is named Moto-Tex W6180, and has recently been approved by the Federal Communications Commission. Motorola hasn’t undergone a name change and hasn’t launched a
phone family named TEX.

In fact, Motorola has absolutely nothing to do with this phone, even if some may think it looks similar to Motorola phones, with its metallic RAZR-like keypad. Apparently, Moto-Tex is an import company that deals with clothing.

The W6180, even though bearing the Moto-Tex brand, will apparently be released by a Chinese vendor.

Uk Drivers face a much harsher regime today for using a mobile phone while driving. This should encourage more motorists to invest in Bluetooth based hands-free systems.

From today, any motorist caught at the wheel with a handset against his or her ear will three penalty points added to their licence and face a fixed penalty fine of £60.

This amount can be raised to a maximum fine of £1,000 for ordinary citizens or - in the case of a driver of a bus, coach or goods vehicle - £2,500.

Alternatively offenders can even be disqualified from driving. Which looks like a very serious incentive to acquire a Bluetooth hands-free system or a car kit.

This will be good news for Bluetooth earpiece vendors unless you happen to be Profitwing which is still railing against Teling of Taiwan. See here.

2225 Samsung and T-Mobile have announced a new clamshell for the US GSM market, the SGH-T219 that targets basic users.

Truth be told, there aren’t that many mobile phone users that want a handset packed with impressive features, and many of the users that do buy such a phone will most likely never use all of its features.

Also, considering that high-end devices usually are expensive, one can easily understand that most users would rather get themselves a functional and convenient phone that comes with the needed features and nothing extra.

And if the mobile phone is stylish as well, even better. Well, for that kind of person, Samsung is providing a low-end clamshell phone, the SGH-T219 which is a nice and stylish, very affordable mobile phone.
